Kitchen Sharing Company dedicated to Delivery Food – Attracted Investment of 9 Million Dollars
A shared kitchen is configured in a specific space so that the restaurant can cook and deliver the ordered food in one space, providing a cooking space for a monthly fee.
Restaurants can quickly build cooking facilities with little capital, so cooking and delivery are possible in ghost kitchens other than one or two flagship restaurants.

1. Reason for Attention
- Ghost Kitchen, also called Dark Kitchen or Cloud Kitchen, is a virtual restaurant that takes orders online and prepares and delivers food without offline stores.
- A kind of ‘food cooking center’ where shared kitchen facilities are provided in a small space, warehouse, container, etc., instead of a typical restaurant with a physical dining table and waiters, and cooks while observing safety and hygiene rules
- It is specialized only for ordering, so there is no need for a table or parking lot, and the accessibility of food transportation means (car, motorcycle, bicycle, etc.) is the most important, and food preparation, packaging, and delivery are performed professionally and quickly.
- Ghost Kitchen has started to grow along with the food delivery platform, and is receiving attention as the food delivery service market such as UberEats, Grubhub, and DoorDash has exploded due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak.
2. Current Business Status
- In 2019, the first kitchen of 465 m² was opened in the Soho area of Manhattan, and 9 brands entered the store and are renting with a monthly membership fee.
- In order to achieve the goal of order fulfillment within 15 minutes, we provide a space to charge mobile phones and have coffee and relax so that delivery workers can wait before completing food preparation.
- The latest $9 million investment will be used for kitchens in five high-demand New York boroughs.
3. Competition
- Kitchen United
- It has attracted investment from Google Ventures and is operating shared kitchens in major cities such as Chicago, Austin, and Los Angeles.
- In a space of over 1,100㎡, 10 to 20 companies share the kitchen
- CloudKitchens
- Founded by former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick, it attracted $400 million in investment from Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund in November 2019.
- Buying 40 real estate in more than 20 cities for $130 million, it is entering the global market and acquiring Simple Kitchen, a ghost kitchen company.
- It also entered Korea and is operating 4 branches in Seoul.
4. Future Prospects
- Opening a restaurant requires a lot of investment in facilities such as building rental, interior design, and franchise, and a vicious cycle continues in which the price of food is unreasonably high due to high rents in good locations. As a result, many restaurants are failing because they cannot invest in the most important chefs, recipes, and ingredients. As an alternative to solving these problems in a sustainable way, the market sees high growth potential of ghost chicken.
- Euromonitor predicts that the ghost kitchen market will reach $1 trillion by 2030, and there is also an aggressive forecast that it will replace 50% of existing restaurant space by 2022.
